EXTREME WEATHER
Residents across the DC region saw record-breaking heat on Friday, January 26, 2024, a little more than a week after a substantial snowstorm. The temperature soared to 80 degrees, which is the highest observed January temperature since records began in 1872. Scientists believe these record temperatures could become more common as climate change continues to affect weather patterns.
BLOSSOMING INTO SPRING
Cherry Blossoms are the tell-tale sign of spring in the DC region. The historic flowering trees draw crowds from around the world, marking the start of spring. The National Park Service monitors the stages of the blooms to predict the peak week each year. The six stages begin with round green buds progress to the fluffy white and pink petals at peak. This year’s bloom was among the longest ever due to the early warmth followed by weeks of colder temperatures, which preserved the flowers. Tourists visited the Tidal Basin at all hours and in all weather conditions to enjoy the natural beauty.
FULL WORM MOON
March’s full worm moon rose over Earth on Sunday March 24th, exactly two weeks before the highly anticipated total solar eclipse that swept over North America on April 8, 2024. Sky watchers across the globe captured stunning images of the event, named for the “worm” beetle larvae, which begins to emerge from thawing trees and winter hideouts.
