OLD TOWN FARMERS MARKET
The Old Town Farmers Market returned on Saturday, February 3rd after a winter hiatus. Just a day after Punxsutawney Phil promised an early spring, the local community flocked to the square in front of Alexandria’s City Hall to buy goods from around the region. According to the City of Alexandria, the Old Town Farmers Market is the oldest in the country held continuously at the same site. Supposedly George Washington sent his produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at this exact location. Vendors offering a variety of goods and services can be found at 301 King Street in Alexandria every Saturday from 7am to 12pm, rain or shine.
GIRL SCOUT COOKIE SALES
Girl Scouts from Troop 53080 in Alexandria, VA were outside a local Jersey Mike’s sub shop on Saturday, February 3rd. The group of girls interacted with the community and sold the iconic cookies for over two hours. This tradition, which began in 1917, teaches girls of all ages about managing money, becoming entrepreneurs, setting goals, meeting deadlines, and working with others. Girls from this troop also spread joy as all their customers left with a smile. The troop leaders shared that this years proceeds will be used to go horseback riding and camping.
POTOMAC YARD STADIUM
Residents voiced their opposition to the Potomac Yard stadium project at the opening day of the Old Town Farmers market 2024 season on Saturday, February 3rd. Stop The Arena is a non-profit coalition working to bring awareness to the community in an attempt to preserve the current character of Alexandria, VA. Members of the coalition were speaking with the community about their opinions on the proposed project, offering insight about how others could get involved.
After months of controversy related to plans to construct an arena and concert venue in Potomac Yard, the City of Alexandria released a statement on March 27th stating that the deal would not move forward. The $2 billion deal with Monumental Sports & Entertainment was praised by Governor Youngkin but met with opposition by Democrats in the VA General Assembly.    
FREE CONE DAY AT DAIRY QUEEN
Dairy Queen celebrated the first day of spring by giving away free treat size cones to customers on March 19th. Patrons lined up across Alexandria and at participating locations around the country to enjoy the world famous vanilla soft serve. This is the eighth year Dairy Queen has marked the season with a free cone giveaway.
