WATERFRONT FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT
On Saturday, January 27th, community members gathered at Lumley Point Park in Old Town to hear the details of the waterfront flood mitigation project. Matthew Landes, from the Alexandria Department of Project Implementation, along with several members of the Skanska team explained the goals of the projected $105 million project. The primary purpose of the project is to mitigate stormwater and frequent tidal and riverine flooding. Other goals include replacing aging and failing shoreline infrastructure and improving public accessibility and amenities at key locations. Once complete, this is expected to reduce the number and severity of flood events and improve the promenade along the waterfront. Unique to this project, the builder and designer were hired simultaneously to address design problems and concepts while construction takes place, which will improve productivity and reduce costs.
The ¾ mile tour along the waterfront allowed for a productive discussion with community members who raised a variety of concerns from costs to design, flooding, parking, and timeline. The team was very transparent, providing honest and detailed explanations. The final design milestones will continue into 2025, with construction expected to begin in the fall of 2025. Substantial completion is projected for summer 2028. Mr. Landes and his team will continue to provide updates to the community through the Waterfront Commission, and with periodic public meetings.
